The area that makes up the village of DeForest and town of Windsor are situated in south-central Wisconsin, approximately 10 miles north of Madison, the state's capital. It is part of the Madison Metropolitan Area and benefits from its proximity to Madison's amenities. DeForest and Windsor have a combined population of around 12,000 residents, with Deforest comprising 10,400 of those residents. The area was originally settled in the 1860s and was named after Isaac De Forest, a railroad executive. The region was closely tied to its location along the Chicago and North Western Transportation Company railroad line.
